Since its inception in 2003, the Excelsior Arts and Music Festival (www.excelsiorfestival.org) has become the largest community event within the neighborhood with an estimated 7000 individuals in attendance last year. The Festival is our opportunity to showcase the artistic talent and cultural diversity within the Excelsior, and is an important way to bring disparate groups within the community together. The Excelsior has one of the largest concentrations of youth in San Francisco, in addition to having one of the largest concentrations of seniors in San Francisco. We are also one of the city’s most ethnically and linguistically diverse communities with large portions of Chinese,Filipino, Salvadorian, Mexican, and White monolingual residents.

Public Discussion

A significant goal of the Festival has always been to celebrate this diversity and to heighten awareness and appreciation of other cultures through the universal languages of art, music and food. The Festival program is centered around a performing arts stage where musicians, dancers, and community groups showcase cultural acts important to them and applicable to our community. All acts are chosen to be family appropriate, given that three quarters of the Excelsior is made up of families. Additionally, the Festival has a separate children’s area (organized by the Excelsior YMCA and Boys and Girls Club and contributed to in past years by the Filipino Community Center, Excelsior Family Connections, Coleman Advocates, PODER, the Excelsior Library, and local school) that is programmed for kids in elementary school or younger. The stage and children’s areas are complimented by an array of vendors and presentation booths, with discounts and preferential admittance being given to both locals and artists.

This year, the Festival will be taking place alongside SF Sunday Streets as it comes to the Excelsior for the first time. While the two events will be kept separate, we hope to benefit from the crowds, marketing, and brand recognition of the SF wide Sunday Streets event. In anticipation of the increased crowds, it is really important to us that this year’s event be spectacular and to have that happen we need the input and participation of all Excelsior Residents. Our goal is to have a performance connected with every cultural group within the Excelsior including, but not limited to: Chinese, Filipino, Salvadorian, Mexican, Italian, African, and Samoan. This is a key strategy for solidifying neighborhood pride, bringing our community together, and putting the Excelsior “on the map” in the hearts and minds of outside attendees.

We want your help and input to make this event a reflection of the Excelsior neighborhood! We encourage everyone to get involved by attending one of our monthly committee meetings or sending us an email at Excelsior.AG@gmail.com
