Dear Excelsior Community,
Great News! After 3 years of displacement from EAG's San Juan offices following the December 2016 fire upstairs, EAG has moved back into its original offices at 35 San Juan Avenue, just off of Mission Street and Ocean Avenue. The Excelsior Action Group is now positioned to help business recovery during this historic COVID-19 pandemic to continue to support Excelsior merchants in a variety of ways, improving their facades, helping businesses become more accessible for their disabled customers, developing websites and marketing plans, and encouraging residents to explore the corridor and shop locally. Once fully staffed EAG will again have the opportunity to plan and support some wonderful events in the neighborhood. Even though EAG operated at a desktop and out of a box, we've accomplished key milestones. EAG is now a fully registered & operational non-profit, a qualified City business partner and actively involved with the Excelsior and Outer Mission Visioning Project . Our fully-functioning Board of Directors is busily structuring EAG to meet its Mission for years to come and fully committed maintaining the highest level of service to the community. Come see our original & new space when we can again mingle and look for EAG to continuing doing great things in the district!

2/28/2014 EAG Responds to SF Chronicle Article "Excelsior awaits benefits of tech boom" Feb 18, 2014Read NowExcelsior Action Group (EAG) is concerned about the negative view of the Excelsior District that we believe was conveyed by a recent article (“Excelsior awaits benefits of tech boom”, Feb 18, 2014). EAG’s focus is on economic development in the Outer Mission Neighborhood Commercial District and we are excited about changes happening in our vibrant,working-class neighborhood. Far from being located in “Siberia,” we are located next to the busiest BART station in San Francisco outside of downtown, and are accessible by numerous MUNI lines. While we are working to fill commercial vacancies, we also have exciting destination-worthy establishments including Live Sushi, Doctor’s Lounge, and Excelsior Yoga, to name just a few. Our library is thriving, and just up the street we have McLaren Park, the second largest park in the City. Most importantly, we are home to residents, merchants, students, and community-based organizations who are working hard for the Excelsior. We certainly don’t want to lose the affordability and charm of our community, but we are interested in attracting businesses to fill local needs, as well as tech-based companies or nonprofits that would like to help train our young people in computer skills. The Excelsior - it is San Francisco!

RSVPs are required to ensure we have enough supplies. Please contact Gwynn Mackellen, Safety Corridor, [email protected] or 415-585-0110. Saturday, February 22, 2014 10AM – 2PM Meet at our Ever Upward Sculpture at Geneva and Mission Hot Spot Survey EAG is creating a Hot Spot survey to determine safety concerns in the Excelsior. This survey will focus especially on pedestrian safety, with questions regarding dangerous intersections and areas of poor lighting. The survey will be online later this month and we will also be doing in-person surveys along the corridor. If you would like to help with community outreach, please contact Gwynn Mackellen, Safety Coordinator, [email protected] or 415-585-0110. Excelsior Community Market 2014 Participate in the 2014 Excelsior Community Market! We are inviting Excelsior Community members to pitch in and make this great community project their own! There are opportunities to plan the Market; become a vendor and sell your wares, produce, and crafts; play music on our Street Stage; volunteer on Market Days; and of course, attend! If you're interested, please contact the Market Committee at [email protected] or 415-585-0110. Anti-Smoking Ordinance Secondhand smoke has been a frequent complaint along the Excelsior corridor. EAG is partnering with the Department of Public Health to pass out information on the city’s anti-smoking ordinance in English, Spanish, and Chinese to businesses, along with the required signage, as many businesses currently lack these. In addition, two local artists, Grace D’Anca and Deborah LeDet will be creating mosaic “no smoking” signs to communicate the message in a beautiful way. If you would like to get involved with this project or would like information on how to get a sign, please contact Gwynn Mackellen, Safety Coordinator, [email protected] or 415-585-0110. Walk To Work Day We’re partnering with WalkSF and Supervisor John Avalos to promote walking as a healthy way to commute to work! More details to follow. Please contact Gwynn Mackellen, Safety Coordinator, [email protected] or 415-585-0110. Friday, April 11, 2014 Next year, SFMTA will be improving the Persia Triangle (intersection of Mission, Ocean, and Persia) to make the area safer for pedestrians, quicker for transit, and more useful for Excelsior community members. This project may include the installation of a limited number of pedestrian-level lighting fixtures. Over the past two weeks, the Excelsior Action Group collected feedback from community members about which lighting fixture should be installed. 548 community members responded via an online survey, a voting station at the Clean Wash Center, and street intercept surveys conducted by EAG staff and volunteers. The results have been tallied and the winner is Option B with 45% of the votes! The Excelsior Action Group will share its findings with the SF Public Utilities Commission, which will develop lighting calculations and a cost estimate for the SFMTA's project. Although EAG cannot confirm that this fixture will be installed, we are grateful for your feedback and will advocate for the community's preferred lighting fixture to be installed at the Persia Triangle!
This fall, the Excelsior Action Group (EAG) is piloting the Excelsior Community Market with a dynamic set of preview market days. The Excelsior Community Market (ECM) provides a centralized place where residents, entrepreneurs, and people of all ages and backgrounds can gather, making a range of activities and affordable amenities easily accessible right in the heart of the Excelsior's Persia Triangle. On September 29, EAG hosted the first preview event of the Excelsior Community Market which occurred in conjunction with the Excelsior Festival and Sunday Streets. The first ECM preview day attracted over 500 attendees! On October 13, the second preview event featured twice as many vendors, live music, and a very popular pumpkin giveaway sponsored by The Garden Project. This Sunday, October 27, EAG will host the final ECM preview day. We invite you to join us, enjoy the event, and help to shape the Excelsior's first community market for its first full season in 2014! The final ECM preview day will occur Sunday, October 27 from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm in the Bank of America parking lot, 15 Ocean Avenue. The market will feature an array of vendors, including artisans Fresh Coast, Squishy Sushi, Yarn & Clay; local business Excelsior Yoga; tasty treats from Estrellita's Snacks; and interactive sculpture by Out of Site Youth Arts Center. Our street stage will feature acoustic performances by local bands SF Jam Station and Adelante Unplugged. There will also be fun giveaways this week from the Garden Project and a free raffle! As always, the market is a great place to bring the kids, featuring hula hooping, a rainbow art screen, jewelry making, free balloons, and Excelsior temporary tattoos. Excelsior Festival t-shirts will be available again, in case you missed your opportunity to buy one during the Festival. This week, we encourage market attendees young and old to come in their Halloween costumes! Looking forward to finishing our preview season with one last great event! Thank you! 10/10/2013 Excelsior Community Market Enhances Community Cohesion and Local Commerce this Sunday, October 13Read NowExcelsior Action Group Organizes 2nd Excelsior Community Market Preview Day (San Francisco – October 10, 2013) On September 29, the Excelsior Action Group hosted the first preview event of the Excelsior Community Market which occurred in conjunction with the Excelsior Festival and Sunday Streets. The Excelsior Community Market (ECM) provides a centralized place where residents, entrepreneurs, and people of all ages and backgrounds can gather, making a range of activities and affordable amenities easily accessible right in the heart of the Excelsior's Persia Triangle. The first ECM preview day attracted over 500 attendees, showcasing a sample set of vendors and offering a variety of fun children's activities.
The next ECM preview day will occur this Sunday, October 13 from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm in the Bank of America parking lot, 15 Ocean Avenue. The market will feature additional vendors like local business Excelsior Yoga, free performances by local bands including SF Jam Station and Beauty Operator, a vegetable, pumpkin and seed giveaway in partnership with the Garden Project, and a free raffle. The market will also include even more children's activities this week including hula hooping, a rainbow art screen, jewelry making, free balloons, and Excelsior temporary tattoos. There may even be surprise guest appearances from the Excelsior Smurf and Mickey Mouse! Excelsior Festival t-shirts will be available at the event, in case you missed your opportunity to buy one during the Festival. The idea of the Excelsior Community Market arose from the confluence of several projects that the Excelsior Action Group has been spearheading over the years. First, the Excelsior Art & Music Festival that has occurred annually at the Persia Triangle for over a decade demonstrated how a market could be a valuable platform for community-building in Excelsior’s diverse neighborhood. Second, the results of a Business Attraction Needs Assessment conducted by the Excelsior Action Group last year exhibited the need for temporary space to be created for business types not currently available in the Excelsior Commercial Corridor, such as bike repair, family activities, and a plant nursery. In addition, the market provides a local space for fostering entrepreneurship and skills-building among residents in Excelsior. Lastly, the Excelsior Action Group has been working with a broad coalition of community organizations and local city agencies to activate, beautify, and make safer the heart of the Excelsior at the Persia Triangle. A seed grant from the Office of Economic and Workforce Development’s Invest in Neighborhoods program has enabled the preview season of the ECM to flourish, creating a fun and immediate solution to meet all of these needs. Join us at the 2nd Excelsior Community Market preview day! Sunday, October 13, 2013 9:00 am – 12:00 pm 15 Ocean Avenue (parking lot), San Francisco, CA 94112 |
