The Excelsior Action Group accepted a project addressing the best long-term solution for using, refurbishing or removing the Chronicle Newsstand Kiosk located at the corner of Geneva Avenue and Mission Street. Considered unsightly and problematic, EAG set about to solve this community-identified request which ultimately involved several community agencies and multi-department coordination with City projects already underway at this location. EAG's Kiosk project goals were to improve the attractiveness of the corner with a refurbished kiosk, and investigate the feasibility of relocating a refurbished or new kiosk to a more central location as a community information source.
As the project proceeded EAG's original design team was unable to complete their design for a new kiosk and the redesign and construction responsibilities were moved to Youth Art Exchange. The completed kiosk was delivered to EAG in late 2016. During this same period the Chronicle removed their kiosk, SFMTA moved their Muni stop to this area and constructed a bus shelter in place of the kiosk.

The Chronicle News Kiosk
This project seeks to redesign, retrofit, and reactivate a blighted old news kiosk at the nexus between the Excelsior and Crocker Amazon neighborhoods. Historically, the news kiosk was a bustling center for current events and communication on the commercial corridor. With the decline of print media in the past decade, the news kiosk has fallen into disrepair. It now stands closed six and a half days a week, attracting graffiti, grime, and negative attention from community members who call for its complete removal. The project may retrofit the news kiosk with a community vetted and more attractive design, or replace it with a new kiosk and activate the newly constructed kiosk up for community use during the week. EAG is also investigating the feasibility of relocating the kiosk to a new site that will best serve the community at large. Check back for more information to come as the project develops...
